No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies, how the process works, and what happens if you don't.

Many carriers now offer accelerated underwriting: for applicants within certain age and size limits, they use the application, prescription records, driving history and other data rather than scheduling a medical exam. Approvals sometimes come the same day. Each quote tells you if an exam is needed, might be needed, or isn't required for that plan.

What it changes

Choosing the fast track does not skip underwriting—just the exam. Your answers get checked against public records and available medical history. A policy issued on false information can be challenged within two years. The carrier may request more information if questions come up, and you can decide whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Most carriers approve this for applicants under 60, applying for amounts within their limits, with clean health history and no tobacco use in the past 12+ months. If recent bloodwork from a doctor visit exists, some carriers may use that instead of an exam.

If one is required, expect a 20- to 30-minute appointment at your residence or workplace with a paramedical professional, at zero cost to you. The result often improves your rate category if you're in good health, so undergoing an exam can actually work to your advantage.
